Ryan Camargo was behind the wheel of a white Dodge Charger with no license plates when he made several traffic violations near Liberty and Hillside avenues in Hillside around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, Hillside police spokeswoman Natalie Ogonowski said.
Officers tried to stop Camargo, but he disregarded the officers' signals and struck a utility pole on Morris Avenue in Union, Ogonowski said.
An officer trying to remove Camargo from the vehicle injured his hand as Camargo accelerated, continuing to elude officers, police said.
The chase continued through Kenilworth and Cranford, and the car was found disabled a short time later on Springfield Avenue in Westfield, police said.
Authorities from Hillside, Kenilworth, Cranford and more searched for Camargo, who was later taken into custody.
Camargo was treated for minor injuries then transported to the Hillside Police Department, where he was processed and charged with aggravated assault, eluding, receiving stolen property and resisting arrest.
He was also found to have an active criminal warrant from Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
Camargo is being held at the Union County Jail pending a court appearance.
